All of us know from experience that the OLDER we get the harder it is to LOSE weight! Actually the cutoff age for the beginning of the uphill battle is 35! Ditto for building muscle!
So I’m sure the majority of you reading this post are past 35 and like myself possibly DOUBLE past 35!
So what do we need to do to LOSE that weight and KEEP it off?
Mike Rousell PhD nutrition adviser to Men’s Health says we must not go ALL OUT when we start a weight loss program: “…if you go extreme right away and then stop progressing, where do you go from there?”
So he advises that you start cutting back 200 to 300 calories daily and STICK TO IT! Now this article deals with men but you ladies could cut back 150-200 calories daily.
You will probably start to plateau from 2 to 4 weeks. Then you want to cut back another 200-300 for men and 150-200 for you ladies. And then repeat!
So let’s say you are a male consuming 2500 calories daily. You would want to cut back to 2300-2200 daily for those 2-4 weeks. Then the next round you would cut back from 2100-2000 daily. You would do this till you reached your goal.
Of course you need to first determine for your amount of weight, height and level of physical activity what is the OPTIMAL DAILY calorie intake. For instance the subject of this article was a 49 year old MALE gym owner weighing in at 195 who had a 15% BODY FAT. After completing his program he reached a weight of 169 with a BODY FAT of 7%!
Now you don’t probably need to strive for these goals as the subject of this article Bill Hartman, a Men’s Health fitness adviser and a former competitive body builder, was seeing if he could get shredded and regain his shape of his 20s!
More on Bill’s program and advice in next post!
